Ali Homan is a quilter based in Durham, North Carolina.
My mom taught me to sew when I was little, and her mom taught her, and so on, and so on, through the branches of the tree that is both me and not me. I love being connected to great grandmothers through craft and hand-work, and feel lucky to have access to some family quilts made four generations ago. I love beauty and chase after it, hungrily, on a daily basis, and have found that there’s a special beauty in the everyday objects that we use with devotion. We cultivate a bond with the objects we use regularly - think of your favorite mug and the ritual you share with it every day. There is something special about repeated use. (I am still alive. My mug is still here.)
A quilt that you love loves you back, do you know what I mean? You can feel it: quilts have a presence.
So… I am basking in the presence of quilts while also making them and exploring my relationship to dreams and color while also being a massage therapist and contemplating what bodies endure in this life.
