STRETCHED PATCHWORK
A (pre-recorded) VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
In this workshop I show different examples of work from several artists making stretched pieces. I also talk about the different considerations for stretching your work… things like: fabric choices, stitch length, and composition. Then I demonstrate how to stretch a piece over a wooden frame and secure it in place.
Scroll below the video for additional resources.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
staple gun
wooden frame
Wooden picture frames work. Old (used or unused)canvases work. Anything a staple gun can go through.
patchwork that is larger than your chosen frame
scissors
hammer
flathead screwdriver
pliers
HERE ARE THE STEPS FOR STRETCHING:
1. Practice your final composition. (This is explained in the workshop- you're just making sure everything is going to lay where you want it to.)
2. SAFELY (move those fingers out of the way) staple three times in the middle of the back of the frame on one side.
3. Pull patchwork across the front, and staple three times in the middle of the opposite side.
4. Pull the third side and make sure it's being stretched in a way you like, and put three staples in the middle of the third side.
5. Pull the patchwork across the front and staple in the middle of the fourth side.
6. Work towards the edges, leaving the corners unstapled.
7. Decide where you want the fabric to overlap the edges and finish the corners.
8. If you are pleased with your piece, hammer down the staples in the back.
*If at any point in time you want to make adjustments, use your flathead screwdriver to pry staples up, then use your pliers to lift the staples out.
Side note: I like stretching the fabric to the point of distortion. You do not have to distort your fabric by pulling so tightly if you don't want to.
